Startups – Rapid Growth and Innovation is in Our Very Nature!

The most independent startup can be the most succesful startup. A cautionary tale about public API.

Yesterday robinhood, the trading app disabled their public data API and a brilliant project dependent on it was forced to shut down. It is doubly sad that I bought a domain to take advantage of the robinhood's public api too. I put in work and now I am a sitting duck.

This wasn’t my first messup with public API. A project I worked with relied on one of google's API and after a significant investment that API shut down days prior to launch. I have seen similar cases with Facebook API.

Most public API are very vulnerable to shutting down randomly and being dependent on them is very risky. Take public API as what is suppliers are to regular business. It is better to have alternative suppliers but it is much better to have no suppliers at all and convert consumers to suppliers. That is how successful consumer tech companies operate these days. The consumer is the supplier and there is cycle and the business is moderately immune to outside forces.

The idea of independence doesn’t only go for API, it goes for everything.
