Barcelona-based on-demand delivery startup Glovo has partnered with Pachama, a Silicon Valley-based carbon credit marketplace in a bid to offset carbon emissions from deliveries by motorbikes and cars. Being a company that is committed to tackling sustainability challenges, Glovo intends to offset 100% carbon emissions from procurement to end-of-life products sold via its app by the end of 2021.
Focuses on sustainability!
Initially, Glovo will purchase 30,000 tonnes of carbon credits representing one tonne of carbon dioxide or mass of any other greenhouse gas from Pachama. This will be used for verified forest carbon projects and will offset the carbon footprint by 25% by the end of this year. Glovo has already pledged to purchase carbon credits that will support the FSC-certified Brazil Nut Conservation project in Peru.
Besides its intention to offset carbon emissions, the last-mile delivery startup aims to minimise its greenhouse gas emissions via initiatives such as order-bundling, food waste management, supplying couriers with backpacks made using fully recyclable or recycled materials and providing partners with sustainable packaging. In fact, this partnership is the first step taken by Glovo on its path towards achieving carbon neutrality.
Interest in reforestation
Deforestation is one of the factors that has the worst impact on climate change and wildlife in the forests. Also, it leaves a tangible impact on the human health as well. The only solution that is important to bring about a positive impact on the climate change and human and animal health is reforestation.
For this reason, Pachama teams up with Glovo to bring about carbon neutrality ambitions via verified forest carbon credits. Signed United Nations Global Compact
The partnership of Glovo and Pachama follows the former’s move of signing the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) in 2019. The UNGC supports the UN’s call for greater corporate social responsibility. This is intended to align its strategy, culture, and operations with those contained within SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and to take the appropriate action to tackle sustainability challenges.
